Spring Cleaning Advice From Your Electrician

Spring Cleaning Advice From Your Electrician
Since we’re all spending a bit more time inside, why not tackle your spring cleaning? From airing out lighter bed linens to cleaning behind appliances, there is plenty to clean and check. But have you thought about spring cleaning the electrical aspects of your home?

If you aren’t sure where to start when it comes to sprucing up your electrical system, your local professional electricians are here with some tips to get you going.

Reduce Electrical Cord Clutter

Over the fall and winter months, it can seem like electrical cords start popping up everywhere and never get put away, just utilized differently. The cord pulled out for the Christmas tree lights is tucked into the corner with someone’s phone charger attached. Suddenly, there are power strips plugged into most of your outlets, and they are overflowing with electrical cords, chargers, and more.

Does that sound familiar? Well, spring is a great time to tidy that problem up. Overloading outlets with power strips can lead to dangerous electrical surges and potentially house fires. Extension cords strung across the house is both a tripping hazard and a potential surge hazard. So, as you do your cleaning, do your best to par down on what electrical cords are plugging in. If needed, you can have a few more dedicated outlets installed to provide you with the electrical power you need.

Swap Out Batteries On Smoke Detectors

Another area to tackle is your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. While most of these detectors are designed to let out a regular, incredibly annoying beep when the battery is low, you don’t want to rely on it. Instead, go throughout your home and change out the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

If your home has hardwired smoke detectors, you won’t need to worry about running out of batteries, as this system is tied into your home’s electrical system. You may want to test the back-up batteries to ensure they still carry a charge, but otherwise, you should be fine.

Examine Your Household Appliances

As you pull out your household appliances to clean behind them, clean the appliance itself, and dust, consider if it is time to upgrade. Older appliances can be a significant drain on your electricity and lead to high electricity bills.

Energy-efficient appliances will be ENERGY STAR-certified, so it will be easy for you to identify what appliances you want. Three of the main appliances that drain electricity in your home are the dryer, washer, and refrigerator.

Check Your Light Bulbs As You Clean Fixtures

Annual spring cleaning often is a great time to clean your light fixtures completely. As you clean each fixture, check what bulbs you are using. If you are using compact fluorescent bulbs—or worse, incandescent bulbs—you might want to swap them out for LED bulbs.

Not only will LED bulbs last longer than your average incandescent or compact fluorescent bulb, but LEDs will use a fraction of the electricity.

Keep Note Of Areas To Upgrade Lighting

As you clean the light fixtures, you may note that not all of them are providing enough light or no longer fit the aesthetic of your home. So, if it’s time to upgrade your home’s lighting, you can count on our electrical services to take care of it.

Whether you want a new chandelier installed in the dining room or have several bedrooms that need new light fixtures, we can help revitalize the lighting in your home in no time.

Consider Outdoor Lights And Outlet Installations

Part of spring cleaning is tidying up the last traces of winter outside your home. In between raking up fallen branches, trimming trees and hedges, you may find your work harder without outdoor outlets. Our electricians can install outdoor outlets so that your clean up work is even easier.

Also, to help you enjoy your backyard even as night falls, outdoor lighting can enhance your backyard and make it more accessible.
